2026 Color Trends – What’s In, What’s Out, and What to Avoid

Color has a massive impact on the vibe of a space, whether it’s a cozy living room or a professional medical office. In 2026, we are seeing a major shift away from the cold, clinical palettes of the last decade. People are looking for colors that feel grounded, organic, and welcoming. 

What’s In: The Rise of Earth Tones and Warm Neutrals

The biggest trend for 2026 is biophilic design,  the practice of bringing the colors of the outdoors, inside. 

• Sage Greens & Terracotta: These earth tones are replacing cool blues. They provide a sense of calm and are perfect for residential bedrooms or commercial waiting rooms
• Warm Neutrals: Move over, millennial gray! We are seeing a surge in Greige (a gray-beige), mushroom, and soft oat colors. These provide a clean look without feeling uninviting.
• Moody Accents: Deep navy, forest green, and even charcoal are being used for accent walls or cabinetry to add depth and color psychology benefits, like focus and security.  

What’s Out: Saying Goodbye to the Clinical Look

• Cool, Blue-Toned Grays: While gray was the go-to for many years, many property owners are finding that cool, blue-based grays can feel a bit uninviting. In the Black Hills where we have bright sun but long winters, these colors can often feel flat.
• High-Contrast (Stark) Palettes: the trend of pairing bright white with very cool gray is being replaced by softer, more integrated palettes that reflect the natural beauty of landscapes surrounding you.

How to Pick the Right Color

Choosing a color is about more than just a swatch. 

1. Lighting: Colors change drastically between morning and evening. Always look at your sample in both natural and artificial light.
2. Consider the Fixed Elements: Your paint should complement the elements you aren’t changing, like your flooring, countertops, or brickwork. 
3. Think about the Mood: Do you want the room to feel energized (warm yellows/reds) or relaxed (cool greens/lavenders)?
